The purchase of a generator alone does not ensure business continuity

The backup power source must match the facility's loads, installation, and procedures. We check power, switching system, back-feed protection, earthing, operating conditions, fuel, and maintenance. We conclude with testing and documentation.

Selection, connection, load testing, and maintenance — as a single process with documentation.

Context188 generators purchased in the region in 2025

Problem confirmed in the region

In 2025, 188 generators were purchased in Lower Silesia, mainly for local government units and administration. The Lower Silesian Voivodeship Office (DUW), State Fire Service (PSP), and TAURON are running a campaign on safe connection — highlighting, among other things, the risk of feeding voltage into the operator's disconnected grid.

Service scope

Three stages — before purchase, after purchase, and during maintenance.

Stage I · Before purchase

Parameters from measurement, not from the catalogue

Measurement and balance of critical loads, inrush currents, selection of priority circuits, mobile or stationary variant, functional parameters for inquiry/technical specification, assessment of location, noise, exhaust fumes, ventilation, and fuel.

Stage II · After purchase

Safe connection and testing

Assessment of compatibility with the facility, connector and grid–0–generator system or ATS, interlocking for parallel operation and back-feed, earthing and protection, labelling, instructions, and testing under agreed load.

Stage III · Maintenance

Readiness that doesn't fade

Schedule of periodic tests, fuel and starter battery check, switchover and load operation tests, log of events and non-conformities, service or coordination of manufacturer's service.

Most common errors

These turn a generator into a mere decoration.

  • Selection based solely on the facility's connection capacity
  • Lack of measurement of inrush currents for pumps and fans
  • Powering the entire facility instead of critical loads
  • Lack of physical interlocking to prevent back-feeding the operator's grid
  • Lack of load testing and a trained backup operator
  • Fuel and ventilation not planned; instructions inconsistent with actual state

Result

What remains after our work.

  • Clear list of powered and unpowered loads
  • Confirmed power and operating time for the scenario
  • Test protocol, switchover and escalation instructions
  • List of parts, fuel, and periodic tasks
  • Material for acceptance and further maintenance

Questions and Answers

Will you connect any generator to an existing facility?

First, we check the compatibility of power, parameters, and installation. If the device is not suitable, we present limitations or the scope of changes — instead of promising a "safe connection" for every piece of equipment.

Can a mobile generator serve several facilities?

Yes, but it requires compatible connectors, logistics, travel time, priorities, and procedures. An audit should check whether failure scenarios will occur simultaneously.

Is 72 hours of power mandatory?

The Act refers to the ability to perform key tasks for at least three days, but it does not establish a uniform operating time for a generator in every building. The autonomy plan results from the task and risk analysis.
